Women’s Rapids wrap-up T20 victory in style

Worcestershire Women’s Rapids produced their best performance of the season as they swept aside Derbyshire Falcons by 29-runs on Saturday.

The Rapids’ batting unit fired on all cylinders as they posted a  187-6, anchored by a sensational 46-ball-69 from Ruby Davis.

In reply, the visitors were restricted to 158 all-out, as youngster Bryony Gillgrass stole the headlines with a magical spell of 5-19 that included five of the top-six batters.

The vital win provides the Rapids with some crucial momentum, having previously sat at the foot of the Women’s Vitality Blast League 2 North table.

Having lost the toss and being asked to bat first, the Rapids’ new look opening pair of Clare Boycott and Ebony Tweats came to the crease looking to improve on recent starts and get their team moving in the powerplay.

Despite losing two early wickets, it was a majestic third-wicket stand of 84 between Davis and Gillgrass in a nine-over blitz that put the Worcestershire side into the ascendency, as Davis struck 69 from 46 deliveries in an excellent innings.

She accumulated 10 boundaries during her stay at the crease, as Bryony Gillgrass followed suit with a spritely 29-ball cameo of 40.

Sophie Beech added a quick fire 28, as the Rapids motored towards a big total at the completion of their 20 overs

The bowling unit started in the face of a Derbyshire Falcons attack, as the hosts reached 90-0 near the halfway point of their chase.

That soon read 92-2 however, as Gillgrass struck twice in two balls, before a middle order collapse saw the visitors take control of the contests.

Flora Bertwistle bowled with her ususal accuracy and guile on her way to picking up three wickets, while Gillgrass continued her work as she grabbed two more for herself as the Falcons slumped to 133-7 in the 15th over.

Amy Wheeler and Jess Beach both picked up a wicket apiece in the closing stages of the innings, as the Worcestershire turnaround in fortune was completed with a 29-run victory.
