former worcestershire paceman gareth andrew and his current ombersley team-mate arti fiaz are raising money for st. richard’s hospice during a 10-day, 1000 mile bike ride.
the duo will complete the latest stage today of the ride from john o’groats to land’s end at worcestershire’s ccc New Road headquarters.
a bucket collection will be held during the tea interval of the home specsavers county championship match with yorkshire today in aid of the charity.
details of any money raised during the collection will be posted on the just giving website tomorrow.
the duo are hoping to raise £10,000 for the hospice.
gareth andrew said: “why are we doing it? my reasoning is very simple, i want to give back and make a difference to others.
“i unfortunately lost both parents in 2016 over a short six month period. i’m still dealing with the huge hole this left, i knew i had to do something to help others.
“my own personal experience has shown me just how important the care st richards hospice provides, both for end of life and their ongoing support for the families and loved ones as they go through a hugely traumatic time.”
arti fiaz said: “i’m not ashamed to admit i have a personal interest. as someone from a minority background, i’m keen to raise awareness within the asian community of the tremendous support and assistance the hospice provides for service users requiring end of life care.
“culturally, the responsibility has fallen on immediate family to nurse their loved ones during this difficult time but there is an alternative environment that can help make this period easier for all involved. ”
