Worcestershire all-rounder Tom Taylor will be bidding for trophy glory on Tuesday (February 25) when Altona North take on Deer Park in the final of the Victorian Cricket Association T20 competition.
Vice-captain Taylor and Altona achieved a seven wicket success over Sunshine CC in the semi-final.
Sunshine were put into bat and dismissed for 94 in 19.3 overs with Taylor making an important contribution with the new ball and in the field to continue his impressive form in the tournament.
He made the first breakthrough in the first over of his initial three over spell spanning the powerplay in having Troy Stone (0) caught behind without a single run on the board.
The 30-year-old also held onto two catches at mid off to dismiss number four Pramud Hettiwatte (nine) and number five Ashan Abeykoon (four), both off the bowling of Jinang Shah.
Taylor, the Rapids leading wicket-taker with 17 scalps in last summer’s Vitality Blast, was Altona’s most economical bowler and finished with 1-14 from four overs.
He then batted responsibly in difficult conditions in making 11 off 25 balls as the foil to opener Asela Aluthge (55 not out) during a second wicket stand of 48.
Taylor was eventually caught at long off from the bowling of off-spinner Dillip Tharaka at 68-2 and victory was completed with 3.5 overs to spare.
He said: “We bowled well on a wet and slow wicket after the rain over the weekend.
“We chased the total well and I just batted time in the conditions until I got out with us needing about 20 to win.
“We will be facing a good team in the final who normally win the Premier League above us and have I think a few ex Victoria players.”
Taylor was also in fine for Altona in their 55 run success over Haig Fawkner in a VTA first grade encounter.
He went in at number three after Altona elected to bat and hit an undefeated 81 off 77 balls with two sixes and four fours.
Altona were 72-4 at one stage but then Taylor added 90 for the fifth wicket with captain Luke Rainone (35) in a total of 212-6 from 40 overs.
Taylor then took the new ball and made the first breakthrough in dismissing Phillip King (0) with only two runs on the board.
He also accounted for vice-captain Samuel Kosmak (15) and finished with figures of 6-1-27-2 as Haig Fawkner were dismissed for 157 in 32.2 overs.
