double award winner charlie morris said his return to being a potent force with worcestershire this summer would not have been possible without the support of many people – ranging from the players to his family.
morris said he will be “forever grateful” for the backing he received from all quarters alongside his own relentless hard work and determination during a challenging period when he remodelled his action.
but it all came together this summer with morris picking up 44 specsavers county championship wickets and taking part in vitality blast finals day for the rapids.
it culminated in morris winning the dick lygon award – for contributions on and off the pitch – and being voted the supporters’ association player of the year.
morris, speaking at New Road four days after the awards night, said: “i truly am honoured and humbled to receive those awards. i never thought i was in the running for it (the lygon award).
“i can honestly say i always dreamed that one day i could get the dick lygon award because it is so symbolic of this club and i was really proud to have been awarded that on friday.
“i have to say a huge amount of thanks to a lot of people because everyone knows it has not been a straightforward path to get back to playing.
“i’ve had to work really hard and i certainly couldn’t have done it without the support of my team-mates first and foremost, the coaching staff, the board and my family.
“when you win an award, sometimes it might seem like the praise should go just for what you’ve done out on the pitch.
“but the reality is i wouldn’t have been able to do that without the support i’ve had.
“for me, picking up those awards is testament to the support from people i’ve had and continue to receive and i’ll be forever grateful to them.
“with your bowling, you are backed up by all your team-mates out on the field as well so it’s very much a team effort.
“there were times when i wasn’t enjoying my cricket at times over the last three years. there were times when my results haven’t been good over the past three years, certainly 2016 and 2017, or as good what people hoped.
“but you’ve just got to keep cracking on. i’ve kept working hard and i’ve kept having support and it helped me get back out on the field and i managed to put some successful performances in.
“i love this club with all my heart, it’s an amazing place to play and i’ll be forever grateful for all the support i’ve had.”
