Paceman Dillon Pennington impressed with the ball as 21 wickets fell on the second day of Worcestershire Seconds Championship match with Derbyshire at Halesowen.
Pennington made the most of finally being able to have an elongated bowl on his return from injury after weather has badly affected the Seconds recent programme – including a first day wash-out of this current fixture.
The England Under-19s player extracted bounce and at one stage picked up three wickets in four balls in Derbyshire’s first innings on his way to figures of 11.3-5-16-5 after the visitors had been put into bat.
Pennington sent back Irfan Karim (1) lbw and Jack Redman (0) – caught in the gulley by Josh Breed – with the fourth and fifth deliveries of his first over and then accounted for Thomas Wood (0) leg before with the first ball of his second over.
Derbyshire were then 1-3 and, with Charlie Morris (13-3-46-3) and Matt Davis (6-3-14-2), also amongst the wickets they slumped to 49-9.
Connor Marshall (26) and James Taylor (34 not out) added 62 for the last wicket before Pennington completed his five-for by having the former caught behind – one of four catches for Alex Milton – as Derbyshire were bowled out for 111 in 37.3 overs.
Worcestershire secured four bowling points for their efforts but also found runs hard to come by with openers Tom Fell (0) and Josh Dell (1) falling cheaply.
Ollie Westbury (27 with five fours) and Jack Haynes (39 with four fours) added 37 for the third wicket and then Josh Breed shepherded them into a first innings lead.
He ended unbeaten on 47 from 83 balls with two sixes and six fours and helped Worcestershire to claim a batting point before they were dismissed for 153 in 56.2 overs.
Slow left armer Mark Watt (5-29) was Derbyshire’s most successful bowler.
Derbyshire batted again 42 in arrears and Davis dismissed Redman – caught at second slip by Dell – as they reached 31-1 off seven overs by the close.
