Jones looking to build upon crucial half century in upcoming fixtures

Worcestershire batter Rob Jones is looking to build on his invaluable half century in the Metro Bank One Day Cup win over Kent during the forthcoming fixtures.

Jones has had a challenging first full season at Visit Worcestershire New Road since scoring a fine 90 in the second Vitality County Championship match of the season against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

But he followed up his 44 not out against Middlesex in this season’s Metro Bank One Day Cup by making 59 in the three wicket win over Kent at Visit Worcestershire New Road on Wednesday.

It is a tournament in which Jones has thrived with Lancashire and now the Rapids and last summer he was their second highest scorer behind Jake Libby when on loan.

Jones said: “It’s all about contributing to a team effort and it was nice for me to spend a bit of time out there. It’s probably been a bit lean for me recently.

“I will always try and give my best and it is nice to contribute and ultimately get a win for the team. That’s the most important thing.

“It was a slow wicket and they bowled pretty straight and accurate and you had to wait for a bad ball. It was almost like red ball cricket at the start.

“You’ve got to trust your defence and wait for a bad ball which I did and thankfully I got a few runs and hopefully I can kick on a wee bit from here.”

Jones admitted: “I’ve probably been a bit desperate for runs, and desperation is never a good thing

“I just got into a bit of a space there where you are desperate to score and instead of letting it happen and letting yourself watch the ball or trust yourself when you are out in the middle.

“When you get a bit like that it can be hard at times.

“But I’ve done well this competition during the last three years and last year was brilliant so I’ve got a lot of trust.

“It was only three knocks ago that I got 44 not out so it is amazing just how quickly your mindset turns a little bit.

“You’ve got to stay level in this game and make sure you are consistent. The other day I only got a few but yesterday I got 50 odd which helped win the game which is perfect.

“You’ve just got to keep believing, keep trusting everything you are doing is right and I feel like I’m doing that and I feel like I’m not out of nick.

“I just haven’t scored as may runs as I would have liked. I’m very positive and I trust everything that I’m doing.”
