Worcestershire CCC all-rounder Wayne Parnell will not require surgery after suffering a shoulder injury during the final Specsavers County Championship match of the season with Sussex at the 1st Central County Ground.
Parnell sustained the setback when bowling during Sussex’s first innings in the rain-affected encounter and left the field immediately amidst concerns over the seriousness of the injury.
But he has been diagnosed with a torn shoulder muscle after seeing undergoing a scan and seeing a specialist.
Parnell has now returned to his native South Africa for the winter where he will undergo rehab for the next eight to 10 weeks.
Worcestershire CCC Head Of Sports Science and Medicine, Ben Davies, said: “Wayne broke down bowling against Sussex. It looked quite serious at the time so I think people thought he had a shoulder dislocation but isn’t that serious.
“He has torn one of his posterior muscles in his shoulder. He had a scan in Brighton, has also seen a specialist in Cardiff and everyone agrees it will be a conservative eight to 10 weeks rehab for him.
“No surgery is needed, there is no serious damage so eight to 10 weeks of rehab, and getting his range of movement and strength back, and he should be fine.
“How did the injury happen? In the follow through of his bowling, he just over-stretched a little bit and it just tugged that muscle at the back of the shoulder and he had a small tear.
“Wayne has travelled back to Cape Town, he will see a local physio two or three times a week and myself and the local physio will liase and sort his rehab out and I can’t see there being any issues.”
