Sarah Glenn picked up a key wicket during her debut ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match for England but she and her team-mates were edged out by South Africa in Perth.
The Worcestershire Women’s Rapids spinner struck in her final over as South Africa chased a target of 124.
She ended a second wicket partnership of 84 between Marizanne Kapp (38) and Dane van Niekirk (46).
Kapp tried to drill the ball straight back down the ground but only succeeded in providing Glenn with a return catch.
She finished with highly creditable figures of 1-26 from her four overs in the latest match in an international career which only began two and a half months ago.
Fellow spinner Sophie Ecclestone (2-19 in four overs) then dismissed Van Niekirk in the next over and at 91-3 from 17 overs, South Africa still required a further 33.
But South Africa managed to edge over the line by six wickets with two balls to spare thanks to a six and a four during the final over from Katherine Brunt.
Natalie Sciver (50) had provided the main contribution to England’s 123-8 in the Group B fixture at the WACA.
