worcestershire women’s rapids will take centre stage at New Road on monday when they tackle cornwall in a winner takes all play-off – with promotion to division two of the royal london one-day cup at stake (11am start).
the women’s rapids will be bidding to regain their division two status at the first attempt following their relegation 12 months ago.
they have bounced back in style by winning four of their five group matches this summer to set up the showdown with cornwall.
they completed the double over leicestershire and shropshire and suffered their only setback against staffordshire with the reverse fixture washed out.
but cornwall have also experienced a fine season, winning their group by just a single bonus point from runners-up the netherlands.
they have triumphed in five of their six fixtures and the clash with the rapids promises to be a real thriller.
admission and parking for the bank holiday fixture is free and foley’s will be open throughout the game serving food and drinks.
women’s rapids coach sam wyles is relishing the opportunity to play such a key fixture at the county’s headquarters.
he said: “playing at new road may be daunting in some ways but a lot of our players have played there before and know the ground, so it’s at least a familiar venue to us.
“we can treat it as just another game of cricket. perhaps playing on a bigger stage adds a bit more pressure for cornwall.
“we really appreciate the opportunity to play at New Road and our thanks go to everyone at worcestershire ccc for their support. it’s a relationship we see growing in 2019 and into the future.”
worcestershire ceo matt rawnsley says the club is delighted to be hosting the fixture.
he said: “the relationship between the county and the women’s rapids is very important to us, and we’re very pleased to be able to stage the game.
“the link between the men’s and women’s games is something we and the cricket board are working hard on, because we believe it will be beneficial to both sides.
“monday’s match is just a part of that process.”
