Worcestershire Seconds have suffered their first complete Second Eleven Championship wash-out for four years after the game with Glamorgan Seconds at Barnt Green was abandoned today without a ball being bowled.
Umpires Jeremy Lloyds and Anthony Harris decided that conditions were unlikely to improve sufficiently for any play to be possible and called off the game at 9.35am on the morning of the third day.
There was mud on the square and a boggy outfield, in addition to water getting underneath the covers after two days of heavy rain.
It has left Seconds Coach Kadeer Ali, and the Worcestershire players frustrated. They will not return to Championship action until the game with Northamptonshire Seconds at Milton Keynes beginning on May 24.
Kadeer said: “There has been some hefty rain over the last couple of days, and it has got under the covers. It is frustrating for the players and the groundstaff, but it is one thing where you can’t do much about it.
“The plan was to play four Championship games on the bounce and then have a couple of weeks where we’ve got a bit of rest time and some training time.
“But, with this one being washed out, it is three weeks before we play again in the Championship, so we are training today (Wednesday) at New Road and hopefully tomorrow as well.
“We’re also hoping to arrange a one-day game or two-day friendly over the next couple of weeks to get a little bit of cricket.”
Worcestershire’s previous Second Eleven Championship wash-out was in 2017 against Durham Seconds at Burnopfield.
